Friendship ruts

Tired of doing the same thing week in week out with the same people having the same conversations? You're in a friendship rut, but help is at hand.


Get the spark back:

  • Do something different together e.g. joining a club or an evening class. It will occupy you both and give you something new to talk about!

  • Make some new mates: They'll inject new life into your circle of friends and offer fresh ideas for things to do and places to hang out.

  • Try new going out to different places: Check your local 'what's on' guide for events and give them a try. If the nights turn out to be disasters, at least you'll have something to laugh about.

  • Take a break/ cut down on the time you spend together: It may simply be that you are living in each other's pockets. This is bound to wear thin after a while, and you'll probably find that after a break you'll have loads to talk about and have a great time together.

  • Interview each other: Even if you've been mates for a while you may find there are lots of things you don't know about one another.

  • Be spontaneous: Do something at the spur of the moment, be it a holiday, a day trip, or buying a gift. Make your mate feel special.

  • Be outrageous: Go and have a few wild nights out, then you can relive the events with your mates.

  • See more films: You can talk about the plot/ how cute the lead character's arse was over a drink or two afterwards.

If all the above fails maybe you have outgrown each other. It can be hard to accept, but friendships, like relationships do come to an end, and maybe it's time to move on and find a new friend.
