Too much sex?

Question

I'm 20 and have sex around four times a week. Could I be having too much sex?

Answer

To reassure you, there is not a set number of times a week that a person should or shouldn't have sex. Having sex four times a week is completely normal and not a problem, as long as both partners are completely happy with the situation and want to have sex together.

The amount of sex that different people like to have varies from person to person, and should be taken into account in any sexual relationship. Some partners may like sex once or twice a week, while others may like sex every day. Some people do not even feel the need for sex at all. All these people are completely normal, and just have differing sex drives.

When it comes to sex, it is important not to feel pressurised into doing something that you are not comfortable with. If you do not want to have as much sex as you are having with a partner, it is important to tell them this.

Communication is an important part of solving difficulties when it comes to sexual problems in a relationship. You need to feel comfortable and able to talk openly with that person about:

  • What feels good for both of you sexually;
  • Which contraception you are both planning to use;
  • What you are prepared to do and not do sexually (this can include how often you have sex).

If you'd like to talk things through you can visit your local Brook Centre or call 0800 0185 023 to have a chat with a counsellor, in confidence, about anything to do with sex and relationships.

You could also visit your doctor (GP) or local Family Planning Clinic. Advice will be given in confidence and contraception offered for free. You can also buy condoms - to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) - from chemists and other retail outlets.
