I'd really like to be able to give my boyfriend head but I'm so nervous I'm not sure I can. Basically, I'm nervous because I'm not totally convinced I know what to do. I've heard how to do it from friends and read a bit about it but what am I really supposed to do?

Unfortunately there isn't a definitive answer to your question. Because everyone is different there isn't a specific way or 'right way' of giving head (oral sex).
Different men and woman do get pleasure from different ways of performing oral sex but usually involves another person using their mouth and tongue to kiss, lick or suck their partner's genitals. Both men and woman may become sexually aroused and have orgasms in this way.
