Bin the PIN?

Question

How can I qualify to opt out of using a Chip and PIN card to make payments, and use a Chip and Signature card instead?

Answer

You're talking about an alternative to Chip and PIN that allows the customer to verify their card using a signature. Generally, this is necessary for people who have difficulty in using a key pad, either because of sight problems or some other disability.

The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) has been running a campaign to educate banks and building societies about visually impaired peoples' problems. Other organisations such as Mencap have also been raising awareness. The organisation running the change over to Chip & PIN also has a website that you may find useful.

If it's something you feel would make life easier, for whatever personal reasons, contact your bank or card issuer about their criteria for getting such a card.
