Contract con-trick
Question
Even though I gave my broadband supplier a month's notice before the end of my 12 month contract, they still say that they will take an extra months payment. Can they do that?
Answer
The first thing to do is check your contract. If you no longer have it, contact your broadband supplier and ask for a copy.
If you feel that they have broken the contract then you should write to them explaining your position and making a complaint. Use clear language and don't get personal or abusive. If possible, include copies of the relevant parts of the contract.
If the contract does require you to pay for a thirteenth month even if you give due notice before the end of the 12 you thought you had signed up for, it might be that the contract is unfair. The Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations protect consumers against unfair contracts, and could give you grounds to challenge your broadband provider.
For further advice about pursuing your complaint, you can contact your local Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB).
