Question

Do students living in rented flats have to pay water bills and can we get a discount if we do?

Answer

Most people living in rented property will have to pay water charges. If you are a student who shares their home with other people the responsibility for paying the bill is shared, even if the bill is only in one name. In addition, students don't get discounts on water charges.

The landlord may have made arrangements to pay the bill to the water company. You may wish to check to see if your tenancy agreement or contract mentions this.

If you're having financial difficulties, your college or university will probably have a students union welfare rights service you could talk to for advice and help.
