Turner syndrome

A lesser-known condition associated with learning disabilities that only affects females.

What is it?

Turner syndrome is a chromosome abnormality affecting approximately one in 2000 girls and women.

How does it affect people?

Features include short stature; non-functioning ovaries; hearing, sight and spatial awareness problems; behavioural problems; learning difficulties.

What causes Turner syndrome?

It is caused by the complete or partial deletion of the X chromosome.

Diagnosis

A blood test will confirm diagnosis, although short stature and infertility are nearly always present.

What treatment is available?

Growth hormone treatment for short stature and IVF for infertility are available. Speech therapy, educational and occupational psychologists, and ear, nose and throat specialists are some of the specialists who can help with care and treatment of those with Turner syndrome.
