Is unhappiness the same as depression, or just a state of mind? Mentally, I feel first rate, and yet I feel completely miserable most of the time. I have a nice house and good job, but cant stop thinking my life is going nowhere. Is this kind of unhappiness treatable, or should I just accept Ill never be truly happy and just get on with things?

Answer

Everyone can feel down from time to time, and people often use the words depressed or unhappy to describe such feelings. Even so, it's only when these troubling emotions begin to take over someone's life for a long period of time that they may be considered to be clinically depressed.

Mental health covers a very wide range of issues, illnesses and disorders. Due to the stigma that sadly continues to exist, many people find it difficult to accept or even acknowledge they are, perhaps, experiencing a mental health problem. Consequently, many continue to try and cope alone without seeking help.

Feeling unhappy and doubtful about your life may well be symptoms of depression, but only your doctor (GP) can make such a diagnosis. S/he will be able to explore your situation further and suggest options of help and support. For example, counselling, to help you address your situation and the elements that are making you question your life.

Feeling as low as you describe can be a very isolating experience, even if close friends and family are around. You do not mention if you have spoken to anyone about how low you're feeling. Sometimes, it can seem pointless talking to people you know, because you feel they don't deserve the 'burden' of your problems. Certainly not everyone knows how to help someone who is feeling so low, but they'll be prepared to listen at the very least. In every case, talking to someone you know may help them understand you better, and also leave you feeling less overwhelmed.
