Question

I was recently attacked and had my face slashed with a broken bottle. I'm covered in stitches at the moment but wanted to know if there's anyway to help the scars fade quickly?

Answer

Although it's natural to want the scars to heal as quickly as possible, treatment for scars is generally not recommended within the first year. This is because during this time they will be healing naturally and their appearance can change dramatically. Although it will not help scars fade, special camouflage make-up is available that is suitable for both men and women.

Some people claim that cream and foods rich in Vitamin E can aid the healing process, but the Scar Information Service states there is no medical evidence to support this. Silicon gel sheets are another possible method for reducing the visible appearance of scars. They can be used to flatten and reduce redness.

Your local doctor (GP) can offer further advice on all of the products mentioned above, although the effectiveness of these and other available treatments can depend on the scar itself and how it continues to heal.

When your stitches are removed your doctor will be able to talk you through the best options available.
