GP gripes

Question

I'm in constant pain and although I've repeatedly told my GP about he won't do anything about it. This is the second GP I've taken this problem to but the reaction has been the same. How can I make my doctor listen?

Answer

You're understandably frustrated by how you're being treated and it can be difficult when your local doctor (GP) appears not to respond to your symptoms.

It's a good idea to prepare before seeing your GP. It might be worth writing down your concerns before going back as this will give you a chance to tell him all of your concerns and symptoms in full. You could also insist on a full medical in order to ease your mind. Remember, it's your body, and a good doctor should respect your concerns.

If this approach doesn't work there are procedures in place to help you get heard. NHS Direct details the various ways to comment on the service you've received, from formal complaints to contacting a local Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service.

It may be an option for you to return to your doctor after familiarising yourself with the complaints procedure. If you then advise them that you want your problems looked into, and if the doctor refuses again, inform him that you are aware of the complaints procedure. It's a bit of a long shot but this may open up dialogue between the two of you without the need to actually complain.

If this doesn't help then you will need to consider actually complaining through one of the various official routes. It's possible that the doctors you've seen have felt qualified enough to make a judgement on your pains without further tests however, doctors are also human so are not immune from making mistakes from time to time.
