Cold sore crisis
Question
I've got a really bad cold sore in the corner of my mouth. I've had them before, but this one is really worrying me because I've had it for nearly a month and it's showing no sign of going. It actually seems to be getting bigger!
I keep it clean and try not to touch it, but it dries up then starts weeping again if I open my mouth too wide. It's so bad that I'm not even going out of the house anymore because it looks horrible. What can I do to get rid of it?

Having a cold sore can make you feel self-conscious - especially if you've had it for a few weeks. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. This virus can lie dormant in your body and then suddenly flare up. It's possible you've had the cold sore for so long because the virus keeps flaring up. It can be triggered off by things such as sudden climate changes, stress, being generally run down, strong sunlight, menstruation and certain foods or medication.
Cold sores are usually treated with an antiviral cream. If the cold sore is persistent, or you find that you are getting them quite often, your local doctor (GP) may prescribe antiviral tablets for you to take. As you've had the cold sore for several weeks now you could make an appointment to see your GP to discuss the possibility of getting some antiviral tablets.
It's important to keep the sore well moisturised to prevent it cracking. According to the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA), something like Vaseline is good for this.
