I've heard that the possession and growing of cannabis is now legal if the person is severely ill and needs it for pain relief. Is this true?
Answer
There has been a lot of debate about the use of cannabis for pain relief. In addition to the fact that cannabis is an illegal drug, debate is further hampered by the fact that research remains inconclusive. A great deal more research will need to take place before there can be a change to the law.
The only cannabis-based drug currently used in the UK is a treatment for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) called Sativex. As this drug is unlicensed in the UK, a doctor has the right to prescribe it under their own responsibility, if they feel it is in the best interests of the patient. The drug is a mouth spray containing two chemicals found in cannabis; THC and cannabidiol.
So, despite this drug being available on prescription in limited circumstances, there are no laws that allow someone to grow or possess cannabis, regardless of the reasons for using it.
