She-agra

Question

I've just taken a Viagra tablet by accident. I'm a woman will it have any effect on me?

Answer

Like any drug, Viagra can have some side effects like dizziness and problems with vision, but if you've taken only one pill and aren't on any other medication then you should be OK. If you do have concerns, however, try calling NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 for advice.

Viagra is intended for men with a medical condition called erectile dysfunction, and should only be used under prescription with a doctor's supervision.

Viagra, and other similar brands, like Cialis and Levitra, relax the muscles of the blood vessels, increasing blood flow into the penis in response to sexual stimulation. A bloke has to get excited before it works - you don't just take it and suddenly have an erection.

Some research has suggested that Viagra might also work for women, increasing the blood flow to the clitoris. However, since the drug should only be taken under a doctor's supervision women are advised not to take it, especially if they're pregnant.

If you are concerned about your sex drive, the best thing is to talk to your local doctor (GP) - if you're uncomfortable talking to a male doctor, ask to see a woman. They'll be able to tell you about the range of help and support available, including a new drug aimed specifically at women.
