Moving on

James and Skye

James is 17 and lives in Dundee, Scotland. He has a baby daughter, Skye, who lives with her mum.
Entry: 5

James has just moved out from his parents' house and is ready to move on with his life.

Loads of stuff's been going on since my last entry. Generally, things are OK and I'm feeling pretty positive. I've moved into my girlfriend's house - we've only been together for about three months so that's all moving fast, but it's going well so far. I now live about a 20-minute bus ride away from Skye, and I'm still going over every second day to see her. My ex still hasn't let me take Skye on my own again since my last entry, so I generally have to go and visit at her house. It makes it hard for me to introduce my new girlfriend to Skye properly, as well, because we can't all go out together. We did run into my ex in town the other day, so my girlfriend met Skye briefly, but it would be better to have a proper day out together. There's no point in pestering my ex about it, though, if I try she just gets annoyed at me, so I'm gonna have to wait some more.

Since I've moved out from my folks' place I've been much happier. I've seen them a couple of times since I moved out and last Sunday I even took Skye over there to meet them for the first time. I phoned my mum and told her I was coming over and she agreed just like that. My mum, my dad and my brother were all there and I stayed there for a couple of hours, just hanging out with them. I'm really pleased - it's a massive step, and they've even said that I can bring her round again. It's definitely helped the situation - since I've moved out my dad's relaxed a lot and isn't drinking as much as he was when I was there.

Despite going to loads of interviews I still haven't managed to find a job. I've been for everything and anything from call centre work, shop work, factory work, anything, but they're not giving me any feedback as to why I'm not getting them. I feel under more pressure to get paid work because I'm a dad it's not like my ex ever asks for money for Skye, but I still feel kinda guilty that I can't contribute.

I'm hoping to start college again in September. I've applied for a computer hardware course, I can't remember the official name of it (it's really long) but it's full-time at Dundee college, and I should find out whether I've got a place in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I need a job to last me and stop me from sitting about, playing guitar... or trying to!
